Chapter 16

‘What the hell is that?’ Will is staring at me like I’ve got two heads. Or maybe he just hasn’t noticed my blue hair before. There’s a lot of hat wearing goes on round here. I’m ultra-glad I got a pixie cut though, ear-warming it is not, but wearing cosy hats all the time gives you helmet-hair. Believe me, I know how bad this can be. I spent three months backpacking round Spain on a scooter. Neither my flat hair nor my numb bum has ever fully recovered.

‘What?’ Maybe he’s just spotted the piece of sticky pancake that went missing at breakfast. I think I’ve started a love affair with maple syrup.

I might not be getting any man action, but I’m seriously making up for it on the chocolate and syrup front.

‘That!’ He’s not staring at my hair, he’s pointing just to the left of my ear.

Aha!

‘That.’ I smile triumphantly because it took a lot of doing and I am proud of my achievement, ‘is a spreadsheet.’

‘I can see that, but why have you just pinned it up in my office?’

I have an inkling that I may have overstepped the mark. That when he said, ‘feel free to make suggestions’ he didn’t mean ‘plan out my life’. It’s just that although people often think I’m a bit flaky and disorganised (this isn’t just me being paranoid, this is what several people have said.) which I am, I like a plan as far as work goes. Life equals no plan at all, suck it and see (literally sometimes). Work equals structure. I structure it to death.

And I realised as I worked my way down my initial list, that it just wasn’t going to be enough. Ticking off the items on there was just the start; what we needed was a rolling plan.

‘It’s all about organisation.’

‘And money.’ He looks like he is fighting a losing battle not to fold his arms or push me out of his office.

‘Yes, and money, but,’ I’m not going to let him put a dampener on my plan, ‘time management is the biggest prob if you haven’t got any dosh, isn’t it?’

He raises an eyebrow and sits down heavily.

‘Can you groan a bit quieter please? And pretend to be interested. You know yourself that you can’t get everything done. You said so.’

‘I need coffee.’

‘Will, I said I’d help you and I want to. Decorating Christmas trees is one thing, but if you think I’m just going to wander round aimlessly looking for stuff to do, then you’ve got it wrong.’ This was the other thing I decided last night. Not having decent phone reception means I have to fill my head with other thoughts. Some good, some less good.

‘I’ve got lots of things wrong lately.’ He gives in and folds his arms. ‘Go on then, Catwoman.’

He’s not been spying on me and spotted my base layer, has he?

‘Can I be Superwoman instead?’

‘It was you that said you were an ice-skating cat the other night, and you’re actually quite like Chloe.
